Teaching Advanced Implantology: My Experience at ICOI Congress 2026 in Chennai

Over the past four days, I have had the privilege of serving as faculty and speaker at two significant events in the dental calendar: the ICOI Congress 2026 and the Noris Medical Quad Zygoma Live Surgery Course. Held at the Saveetha University Dental Hospital in Chennai, India, these events brought together some of the most dedicated professionals in our field to discuss the future of implant dentistry.

Reflecting on the flight back to Singapore, I am struck by the incredible pace of innovation in our industry and the shared commitment to clinical excellence that transcends borders. Education has always been a cornerstone of my professional life, and being able to contribute to the training of the next generation of surgeons is a responsibility I hold in high regard.

A World-Class Standard of Excellence

The ICOI Congress was organised to an exceptional standard, both scientifically and operationally. I would like to extend my sincere congratulations to Dr. Sunil Nettem and the entire ICOI HQ team for delivering such a comprehensive and insightful programme. The level of coordination required to host an international delegation of this scale is immense, and the execution was flawless.

Having attended and spoken at various conferences across Europe and the West, I was genuinely impressed by the sophistication of Saveetha University Dental Hospital. The calibre of its faculty, surgeons, and staff is world-class. Their professionalism and hospitality created an outstanding learning environment for everyone involved, facilitating the kind of deep technical exchange that moves our profession forward.

Advanced Surgical Training: The Quad Zygoma Course

A particular highlight of my time in Chennai was participating in the live quad zygomatic implant surgery programme under general anaesthesia. This was an intensive course focused on managing the severely atrophic maxilla, a condition where patients have significant bone loss in the upper jaw, making traditional implants challenging.

Teaching alongside an outstanding faculty, I had the opportunity to guide clinicians through the complexities of quad zygomatic placements. These procedures are transformative for patients who might otherwise have been told they are not candidates for dental implants. Sharing the nuances of soft-tissue management and contemporary closure strategies is vital for ensuring long-term success in these advanced cases.

It was a privilege to represent both Noris Medical and the International Congress of Oral Implantologists (ICOI) during these sessions. I am grateful to Noris Medical for the invitation to serve as faculty and for their ongoing support in developing the technology that makes these life-changing procedures possible.

Building Global Connections

Beyond the operating theatre and the lecture hall, one of the most rewarding aspects of the congress was the opportunity to meet new colleagues. I enjoyed exchanging ideas and building lasting friendships with clinicians from around the world. These interactions remind me that while we may practice in different regions, our goal remains the same: to provide the highest standard of patient-centred care through clinical expertise and innovation.

The dedication shown by the participating clinicians was inspiring. Many had travelled great distances to refine their skills, demonstrating a commitment to lifelong learning that is essential in a field as rapidly evolving as implantology.
