Dentistry and Healthier SG

Updated: Apr 8, 2023

As a dentist, I have seen firsthand the importance of regular dental screenings in maintaining good oral health. Dental screening is a crucial part of Healthier SG, which aims to promote good health and prevent chronic medical conditions.

During a dental screening, I check for any signs of tooth decay, gum disease, oral cancer, and other dental issues. Many dental problems, such as cavities or gum disease, may not show any symptoms until they have already progressed. Therefore, regular screenings are essential to catch any problems early and prevent them from getting worse.

I recently had a patient, let's call her Sarah, who had not seen a dentist in several years. Sarah had been experiencing tooth pain but was hesitant to seek treatment due to fear and anxiety about dental visits. When she finally came to see me, I found that she had several cavities that had progressed to the point of requiring root canal treatment. Had she come in for regular screenings, we could have caught these issues earlier and prevented more extensive treatment.

In addition to preventing dental problems, regular dental screenings can also have an impact on overall health. Studies have shown that poor oral health is linked to several chronic medical conditions, such as heart disease, stroke, and diabetes. By maintaining good oral health, we can help prevent these conditions and promote overall well-being.

As a dentist, I recommend that patients schedule regular dental screenings at least once every six months, or more frequently if they have a history of dental problems. I also encourage patients to practice good oral hygiene habits, such as brushing twice a day, flossing daily, and avoiding sugary foods and drinks.

In conclusion, dental screening is a crucial part of maintaining good oral health and promoting overall well-being. Don't hesitate to schedule your next dental check-up and speak with your dentist about any concerns you may have. Remember, early detection and prevention are key to a healthy smile and a healthier you.
